Painting Techniques

On this structured course you will be guided in techniques for experimenting with a range of painting and drawing materials to help identify and express your ideas.

What you will learn

You will be introduced to experimental and traditional approaches to painting and drawing and your tutor will demonstrate exercises which help develop observational skills, dexterity and confidence.

A variety of media will be used, including pencil, charcoal, acrylic and oil paints. You will be encouraged to experiment with methods, surfaces and tools in order to gain a practical understanding of how to generate and express individual qualities and ideas.

Summary outline week by week:

  1. Charcoal and tone on paper, observing simple objects
  2. Oil painting on board or prepared paper. Tonal under-painting from observation using brushes and rags as tools
  3. Developing oil painting from week two, exploring brush work and colour in relation to under-painting
  4. Observing objects with flowing line, exploring varied formats and creating compositions
  5. Acrylic painting on un-primed canvas, transposing compositions generated in week four. Exploring techniques for colour mixing, staining, bleeding (wet-into-wet)
  6. Developing acrylic painting from week five, exploring expressive layering of colours, techniques for masking, generating sharp or soft edges

Regular group discussions facilitated by the tutor will encourage you to evaluate your own progress and that of your fellow students, sharing discoveries and learning from one another.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress ou your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
