Professional Illustration: Essential Skills

In a world where communication has shifted dramatically towards image-led exchanges online, illustration offers great opportunities for a creatively rewarding career. Illustration is client-based, commercial image making and has boomed as an industry over recent years with 80% of illustrators in the UK working part-time from home. An illustrator works to brief, collaborating with the client in regards to their needs, within the boundaries of a budget and deadline! Types of illustration include editorial (magazines and newspapers), publishing (books), advertising, educational and physical spaces. Specialisms within illustration includes zoological / botanical or medical illustration.

What you will learn

You will work in a computer studio on location learning the process of illustration brief delivery and using creative software to make artwork. Classes are a mix of presentations and exercises, working individually and in pairs and groups. This will support active making. Your work will be shared with the class and feedback is seen as valuable to your learning. Students will use computers in the classroom and have access to a printer and an online intranet to download related learning materials away from the college.

Advice will be given on equipment and techniques that may be useful to you. An introduction to the essential skills required by commercial illustration will help contextualise your learning. It is expected that you have some basic drawing ability. No previous software or computer related skills are necessary to join this course, as you will be exploring the basic application of the software. By exploring a range of approaches and techniques you will answer briefs to deliver a wide range of outcomes. This is an exciting, challenging course to develop your commercial image making skills.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress ou your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.
