Course description

Advanced Structural Analysis

This course provides you with an introduction to specialist topics including the stiffness method and plastic, plate and dynamic structural analysis.

It will also provide you with the necessary tools for carrying out refined structural analysis, and the skills to use structural analysis software for solving problems.

On this course, you’ll develop the ability to apply engineering concepts and mathematical knowledge to modelling structural systems, and better understand the behaviour and performance of more complex structural systems.

This course will include:

  • kinematic and static indeterminacy of framed structures

  • linear elastic behaviour

  • matrix structural analysis

  • plastic analysis

  • critical loads and buckling modes

  • the calculation of natural frequencies and their response to harmonic and transient loads

  • the elastic solution of plates using analytical and numerical methods

  • the plastic solution of plates using yield line theory.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • integrate your knowledge of mathematics, science, IT, design and engineering practice to solve a range of (sometimes complex) problems
  • assess the capabilities and limitations of computer-based methods for solving problems
  • generate innovative design for systems, components or processes to fulfil new needs
  • evaluate new and emerging technologies.

Teaching and learning will take place using a flexible programme of lectures, workshops, seminars and tutorials.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Level: Professional/postgraduate

Entry Requirements: You should have a minimum of three years’ professional experience and have the support of your employer to integrate study and projects into your day-to-day work.

You will probably be employed on significant infrastructure or building works, with experience of developing and coordinating projects.

If you wish to receive credit, you should also have a 2:2 honours degree in a construction-related subject.

Applicants with non-standard entry qualifications and/or relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

A CPD certificate will be issued upon successful completion of a course.

Passing the assessed element (an exam or coursework) can also contribute credit towards a postgraduate award. All candidates seeking credit will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. If you wish to receive credit you must mention this at the time of application, or with your tutor at the earliest opportunity.
