Course description

Domestic Machine Knitting and Garment Skills

The aim of this course is to encourage you to think creatively about using a domestic knitting machine and to show you how to exploit the equipment to create new, innovative garments.

Many people rely on working from other people’s knitting patterns, as they do not have the skills to write their own patterns.

This can mean you feel compelled to buy expensive new yarn rather than being able to use up the mountain of yarn you have hidden in the cupboard!

This course will furnish you with a range of skills and techniques, which will enable you to design and make garments at home, without the need for fancy gadgets and machinery.

This course is taught using Silver Reed knitting machines; however, you have the option to bring your own machine.

It's suitable for intermediate and advanced machine knitters - the key skills required are the ability to produce fabric on a domestic machine and to be proficient with a transfer tool.

Ideally you will have made at least one garment before.

On this course you will:

  • gain skills in basic garment design and pattern cutting
  • calculate knitting instructions and learn about yarn counts in order to write your own patterns
  • explore knitting techniques for a range of garment components such as pockets, button bands and neck trims
  • have the opportunity to develop fabric ideas.

What will you gain?

You will go home with a range of knitted samples, handouts, a basic pattern block for a jumper and lots of new skills and knowledge that will inspire you to get home and design and plan your next project.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the Bonington building at the City Campus, our dedicated art and design hub.

You will have access to an excellent range of facilities and equipment in the knitwear studio and yarn store.

You will be taught using Silver Reed knitting machines; however, you have the option to bring your own machine if you prefer.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Tutor profile: Dr Jane Taylor has been teaching knitwear design for 17 years, initially at UWE in Bristol and more recently at NTU.

She moved up to Nottingham in 2010 to embark on an MA course at NTU, impressed by the universities’ extensive  knitwear resource - and never left, going on to do a PhD.

Jane has developed her knitting skills to be able to programme and run computerised, industrial machinery; however, she relishes the opportunity to get back to working with her hands on domestic machines.
