Course description

Product Design for Beginners

This course combines practical workshops, lectures and group critiques that will introduce you to product design and innovation, from idea to manufacture.

It’s an ideal introduction, especially if you are thinking about a change of career or future studies.

It’s also ideal if you’re interested in working on projects that will strengthen your professional portfolio and which demonstrate new approaches in your work.

For this course, the ideal attendee will be ideas and solution-driven, open to new ways of working and able to work with others in a positive way.

It will develop your design and interpersonal skills, and considers new ways of thinking and better team building – essential tools for successful product design.

Set projects will be completed individually and collaboratively, which will share a simple theme: to design innovative new products that can be easily adopted by an end user and which will become an integral part of everyday life.

On this course, you will:

  • Explore how to develop your design and creative thinking skills
  • Provide solutions to design problems
  • Investigate how to create new concepts that appeal to audiences with differing needs and abilities
  • Undertake quick, practical workshops in sketching, model making, CAD and presentation techniques
  • Learn about design theory, design analysis and design futures
  • Identify ways in which new products can best be positioned in the busy market place
  • Iearn how you can start an effective branding and marketing strategy
  • Hear about how to protect your ideas, designs and trademarks.

What will you gain?

By the end of the course, you will have an understanding of the processes within design, from concept to final product, and new work to enhance your portfolio.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.

You’ll find collaborative working spaces where you develop your sketches and concepts, and IT suites equipped with industry standard software including Adobe Creative Cloud and AutoCAD.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Tutor profile: Kathryn Pashley has over 15 years’ experience designing products for sports, the home and public spaces, both in-house and freelance.
