Course description

Reading Architecture: From Norman Castles to NG2

This course is all about the language, history and context of architecture in the city of Nottingham, from Norman Castles to NG2.

It will explore the architectural styles associated with key buildings and their primary features, and will combine taught classroom sessions with short ‘reading’ tours in and around the city.

The course will provide an introduction to understanding architectural language, context and how to read architecture in historical and contemporary buildings.

This knowledge will support your understanding and critical engagement with everyday surroundings.

It’s about your personal development and the enrichment of your understanding and appreciation for the built environment.

It will feed your curiosity about why things are the way they are in our cities, and your desire to know how architecture has evolved into the contemporary structures of today.

The course is a mixture of taught sessions and hands-on exploration of the architectural make up of Nottingham.

It’s for anyone with an interest in architecture and design - students, professionals, historians and absolute beginners.

On this course, you will:

  • complete walks and visits to key buildings where the theoretical aspects of the talks can be applied
