Course description

V-Ray for Beginners

On this course, you’ll be introduced to the world of V-Ray rendering using a combination of Autodesk 3DS Max artwork and animations (V-Ray for 3DS Max) and Unreal Engine virtual user experiences (V-Ray for Unreal Engine).

It’s aimed at designers who wish to develop their skills and CV whilst adding new visuals to their portfolio.

V-Ray is a rendering tool (often called a rendering engine) that is used to create realistic graphics, animations and experiences.

It’s used by professionals across all the creative industries, from architects and animators to game designers and film makers.

This course is therefore open to people of all backgrounds.

It’s a combination of demonstrations and practical exercises and, as the course progresses, you’ll be invited to bring examples of your own projects to work on with the tutor.

On this course, you will:

  • be introduced to a simple studio scene and V-Ray rendering in Autodesk 3DS Max
  • explore both traditional V-Ray methods and newer V-Ray GPU (graphics card based rendering) methods
  • investigate lighting, including standard lights, photometric lights, and virtual daylight
  • apply different materials and learn how to map textures onto 3D objects
  • produce simple animations in 3DS Max and output via V-Ray
  • be introduced to capturing real-world lighting and photo backplates to use in V-Ray renders
  • learn about architectural floorplan building and rendering, and how to merge 3D assets (like plants and furniture) from other scenes
  • explore how a 3D environment is created in 3DS Max to import into V-Ray for Unreal Engine
  • discover options for online cloud rendering for V-Ray to gain extra speed for large projects.

What will you gain?

On completion of this course, you will know how to create high-resolution images, and have a good understanding of the different file types and how to output files to a professional level.

You will also be able to apply V-Ray knowledge to Unreal Engine virtual user experiences.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.

You’ll work in our spacious IT suites equipped with industry standard software inlcuding Adobe Creative Suite and Autodesk Productivity Suite.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.
