Course description

Introduction to mobile systems:

This e-learning course is designed for those who are, or intend to be, involved in the planning, installation, provisioning or maintenance of mobile systems. This online course introduces concepts which are used in most types of mobile systems, like handover and roaming, and cellular traffic handling. The course also reviews the various generations and types of mobile system.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • explain degrees of mobility, differentiate between location and position and describe the effects of these concepts on system and service design.
  • describe the role of the basic components of a cellular system.
  • explain the need for registration (authentication, authorisation and accounting) in mobile systems.
  • explain the concepts of handover and roaming.
  • describe cellular system traffic handling and explain how expansion may be provided.
  • describe the characteristics and applications of digital radio systems (including DECT, PHS, TETRA, WiFi, WiMax, and Bluetooth) which differ from cellular systems such as GSM.
  • describe how the allocation of radio frequency bands to particular applications is co-ordinated globally.
  • describe the concept of generations of mobile systems, define the official terms "2G" "3G" and "4G" and describe fractional G terms like "2.75G" and "3.5G".
  • describe the enhanced capability and applications of "LTE Advanced" systems.

This online course includes assessments, the results of which are summarised in a certificate published at course completion.

Suitability - Who should attend?

A basic understanding of the fundamentals of electronic communications is assumed. It is recommended that the PTT online course "Analogue and digital signals" is studied in preparation for this course.
