Course description
This course is aimed at engineers and technicians who are involved in the provision of a television over Internet Protocol (IP) networks and provides an introduction to the technical infrastructure necessary to provide video services over IP (IPTV).
This course describes the technical infrastructure, protocols, and operation of systems that deliver IPTV video services.
The course begins providing detail of MPEG programme and transport streams with reference to programme map tables. The various types of video service are described and compared and the role and features of broadcasting, multicasting and unicasting described. The roles of the various software and hardware components of an IPTV system are described including those involved in IGMP multicasting and storage of digital media. The role and operation of admission control and resource reservation protocols are described. The testing of a Video over IP service is then discussed with reference to the factors that affect channel changing speed and the types, capabilities and use of IPTV test equipment. Finally, methods of integrating an IPTV service with a next generation network are described with reference to the role of an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS).
This online course includes assessments, the results of which are summarised in a certificate published at course completion.
