This course will benefit anyone who would like to acquire the necessary skills for making their own clothes and wishes to obtain a recognised Gateway qualification: Level 1 Award in Progression – Garment Construction: Sewing Skills. This course could enhance your job prospects or give you the basis to continue on to a full-time fashion course.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- About the tools and equipment used in garment construction for marking, measuring, pinning, cutting, stitching and pressing.
- How to perform basic hand sewing techniques using a variety of stitches and how to select appropriate fabrics and threads for hand sewing.
- How to use a sewing machine to do straight, zigzag and decorative stitching.
- How to use an overlocker to produce seam finishes.
- How to construct a sewn artefact as well as learning about health and safety in relation to garment construction.

Suitability - Who should attend?
The course is suitable for complete beginners and for those with some sewing knowledge who wish to develop their sewing techniques. You must be willing and able to work towards building a Portfolio of Evidence which will be formally assessed by the tutor. Reasonably good hand-eye coordination is also necessary. Please note: This course is not run as a workshop, and learners will be expected to follow the course programme and projects set by the tutor. Learners must attend regularly to ensure progress. Learners must be willing to work towards the Level 1 Award which is assessed through a portfolio of coursework.
