What will I learn?

Do you have a story you’d like to tell? Are you interested in photo journalism? This course offers you the chance to create a personal story and learn about how to visually present it using your own photo stills and creative writing. Louis Quail is a documentary photographer exploring social and aesthetic issues. His latest project, Big Brother captures his brother’s struggle with Schizophrenia. We are very lucky that Louis will be teaching this exciting Digital Storytelling course at Hillcroft. You will learn about how to tell a story through various exercises: how to produce content by writing a synopsis, storytelling with imagery, how to edit photos to create a strong set of images. You will be shown the basics of a DSLR camera and also given the option to use the camera on your phone. You will be given an outdoor shooting exercise to get you thinking on your feet and using your surroundings as inspiration to tell a story. You will also create a more personal, and introverted photo journalistic story about something of personal significance to you. For this exercise, please bring in an item that holds some meaning – it could be something that brings you happiness, something you’ve had for a long time, something with sentimental value, or something that makes your life easier – anything that you feel could tell a story about you. At the end of the course we will have a group critique in a supportive, friendly environment where you will all get to give feedback to each other about your individual projects. If you are feeling inspired at the end of this course, perhaps you would like to progress onto a more in depth photography course or a film making course at our Richmond site.
