Technical Safety Programme
Through the 2019 Technical Safety Programme, Risktec is offering the opportunity for you select up to nine of our hand-picked, two day courses which are delivered face-to-face by our industry experts.
The program offers a range of topics, relevant to the Oil & Gas industry, which can be studied as standalone modules or as part of a Risktec Professional Qualification.
The courses have been developed such that the content and learning outcomes are at the same level as our postgraduate modules approved by IChemE in support of the knowledge and understanding requirements of their Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
Each course comprises around 100-150 slides, several videos and, most importantly, activities designed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of participants. Each course provides a hands-on learning experience, with emphasis on the activities. Many of the slides provide backup content for reference purposes.
The Risktec trainers are active practitioners in the process sectors. They have extensive training experience and utilise accelerated learning techniques. The Risktec trainers draw heavily on their practical experience when delivering this training program and provide examples of experiences in the real world.
If you choose to undertake a Risktec Professional Qualification, you will be given the assignment question to take away with you at the end of the second day and will be provided with a deadline for submission of your assignment to Risktec. Upon successful completion of all assignments, you will receive your Risktec Professional Qualification.

Outcome / Qualification etc.
As standard, the courses are available without assessment but if you would like to achieve a qualification, you can choose from one of the following Risktec Professional Qualifications:
- The Risktec Assessed Certificate (RAC) consists of your choice of 4 courses. Following each course you will be required to complete a 1,000 word assignment. Upon successful completion of all 4 assignments you will be awarded a Risktec Assessed Certificate.
- The Risktec Assessed Diploma (RAD) consists of your choice of 8 courses. Following each course you will be required to complete a 1,000 word assignment. Upon successful completion of all 8 assignments you will be awarded a Risktec Assessed Diploma (RAD).
Training Course Content
Bowtie Risk Management
Bowtie method; Critical elements & tasks; Barrier effectiveness & ALARP; Practical uses of bowties; Facilitating workshops; BowTieXP software.
SECEs & Performance Standards
Engineered Risk Control Systems (ERCSs); Identification of ERCSs and criticality ranking; Performance standards; Performance assurance and verification; Performance monitoring; Asset integrity throughout facility lifecycle.
RAM (Reliability, Availability & Maintainability)
RAM planning; RAM assessment methods; Critical and life-limited items; Maintainability demonstrations; Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM); Methods of improving reliability.
Functional Safety (inc. SIL)
The safety lifecycle (IEC 61508 view); SIL selection (setting targets and requirements); Safety requirements specification development; LOPA; SIL and the design process; Beyond design lifecycle phases; Compliance demonstration.
Physical Effects Modelling (Gas, Toxics, Fire, Explosions)
Source term release and discharge calculation; Dispersion analysis; Fires and explosions; Subsea releases/oil dispersion; Vulnerability of structures and equipment; Software tools.
QRA (Quantitative Risk Assessment)
Hazard/scenario identification; Frequency assessment & event trees; Consequence modelling; Risk analysis, tolerability & sensitivity; Non-process hazards; Software for QRA.
Technical Safety Studies (inc. FERA, EERA, ESSA, Dropped Object)
Fire and explosion risk assessment (FERA); Escape, Evacuation & Rescue Analysis (EERA); Occupied Building Risk Assessment (OBRA); Dropped objects; Ship collision.
Human Factors in Design & Operations
Human factors in design; Information processing & operations; Human error identification; Human factors integration.
Historical drivers, legal & industry requirements; Safety/HSE case by project phase; Safety/HSE Case structure; Bridging documents & supporting studies; Safety/HSE case maintenance; Roll-out and implementation.
