Arabic (Modern Standard) Elementary

The aim of Arabic Elementary is to provide students with the communicative skills to enable them to engage interactively in commonly encountered activities and situations. Class instructions are mostly delivered in Arabic but a mixture of Arabic and English will be used to introduce and explain new grammatical points. Students are encouraged to participate in drilling practice, pair work and group work. The various skills of the language are reinforced through relevant activities in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Students are expected to do written homework and listening exercises in their own time outside the class. There are two consolidation sessions: one in the middle of the course and one at the end of the course. Consolidation exercises aim to provide further practice of the recently learned language through different activities. Teaching methods target the language skills of the whole group as well as giving specific help to individual learners, ensuring that every student is learning according to their own learning style.

By the end of the course, learners are expected to be able to communicate confidently in simple and routine tasks requiring direct and straightforward exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. They will also be able to read, understand and write relatively short texts and convey their intended meanings with sufficient accuracy to be understood.
