Urdu Beginners

This course covers basic grammar and essential vocabulary, enabling learners to communicate in Urdu, on a limited range of topics relating to everyday situations. The course is taught in Urdu with use made of English transliteration until the student begins to gain confidence in the Urdu script. The course concentrates on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, with the main emphasis on speaking.

Students take part in interactive language activities, participating in group and pair work to practice vocabulary, making sentences, role-plays and grammar structures. Homework is set weekly for regular assessment. There is an overview, consolidation and feedback session in the final week, concentrating on the material covered in the term. By the end of the first term, students are able to understand and communicate using Urdu in very basic situations. Students should be able to understand simple oral and basic written texts and understand specific information on simple, everyday topics.
