Course description

Advanced Technical Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make Up Artistry:

This course is aimed at learners that are looking to start a career as a make-up artist. This course will show you how to apply and master specialist make-up techniques and work with artificial hair for a broad range of creative and dynamic industries. You will cover every aspect of advanced make-up techniques for film, television and stage alongside other media purposes. This comprehensive course covers basic hairdressing, media make-up, wigs and postiche, character make-up and special effects.

The course will cover: Hairdressing Techniques for Media Make-up; Provide Wigs and Postiche for Media Make-up; Prepare for and Provide Character Make-up; Provide and Remove Special Effects and Media Make-up and Good Working Relationships with Colleagues, Artistes, Subjects and Production Teams.

The programme consists of the following topics: Cutting and styling techniques for performers; Avant-Garde hair and make-up Creative make-up design for productions and industry demands; Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps; Special effects make-up; Create, dress and fit facial pastiche; Body art for competition; Create; cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps and Wig dressing, fitting and maintenance. Learners may study GCSE or functional skills Maths as an important part of the course.

There will be an end of year exam for theory and the practical will consist of a synoptic assessment test. Assessment takes place in a range of realistic working environments, including shows, competitions and theatre productions. You will get Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Media Make-up Artistry, City and Guilds and Maths qualification (if required).

On successful completion of this course, there are job opportunities in the television, theatre and film industries - or you could explore becoming a freelance make-up artist. Students can also progress on to the foundation degree or degree in Specialist Hair and Media Make-up, Spa Management or Beauty Therapy Management.
