Get to Know Your Sewing Machine - Beginners [HDF6111G]: OverviewOn this course you will learn how to set up and use your own sewing machine, to discover its potential and to become more confident using it. We hope to inspire you to sew more and enjoy the process!
What will we cover?
We will cover how to wind the bobbin, thread the machine correctly and adjust the tension. We will explore the potential of your machine and the different stitches and learn about the different needles and threads for different fabrics. Given time, we can then look at the applications of the different feet on your machine.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is for beginners and those with a little experience – anyone who does not feel they are getting the best out of their machine.
As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.
What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
Please bring your own sewing machine in good working order, your sewing machine instruction manual and the following tools and materials:
A notebook, pen, pencil, 30cm ruler or tape measure, pins, needles, thread, a pair of scissors, approximately 1 metre of light coloured fabric, assorted pieces of different medium weight fabric.

What can I do when I finish the course?
Further courses are offered on How to Use and Maintain your Sewing Machine and how to use your overlocker. There is a variety of sewing classes within Surrey Adult Learning ranging from sewing & garment making – beginners to more advanced pattern cutting and tailoring, also patchwork & quilting, soft furnishings and upholstery.
