This course aims to help you get the very best out of your sewing machine and learn its many uses; gain confidence using the different feet and their applications and keep it working well by learning the basic maintenance of your machine.
This class would be an ideal follow on course from the Get to Know Your Sewing Machine course.
What will we cover?
We will learn about the different feet, their applications and how to change them; we will look at the variety of needles and threads and their uses for different fabrics; we will learn how to sew a buttonhole and insert a zip. Learn the basic cleaning and maintenance of your machine so it will always perform its best for you. Then we will look at the variety of stitches your machine can perform and explore its possibilities.
If you are working on a particular project you are welcome to bring a sample of the material with you.
Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
This course is for anyone who has a basic knowledge of using their own machine yet is keen to improve their skills, knowledge and maintenance. It is ideal for anyone who has attended a Get to Know your Sewing Machine course with Surrey Adult Learning.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
Please bring your own Sewing Machine, your Machine Instruction Manual & Tool Kit and the following tools and materials:
Notebook, pen & pencil
30cm ruler or tape measure
Needles, pins & thread
Fabric scissors and small scissors
Approximately 1 metre of light coloured fabric and assorted pieces of different medium weight fabric.
10cm of interfacing
20 cm Zip
Small brush (a small paint brush will do)
A screwdriver either flat or crosshead depending on your machine (if in doubt bring both)

What can I do when I finish the course?
Further courses are offered within Surrey Adult Learning for keen sewers including using your overlocker, sewing & garment making, from beginners to more advanced pattern cutting and tailoring, patchwork & quilting and upholstery.
