Course description

Discover Photography:

If you have a DSLR camera but always shoot on automatic, then this course is for you. We'll cut through the jargon, from aperture to shutter speed, and you'll gain the confidence and skills to make the most of your unique view on the world.

You'll be taught by two leading industry professionals at London Met's renowned art school, The Cass, in this practical five-day course. Initially we'll be covering a range of topics including:

  • how the camera works
  • basic functions
  • shooting using RAW files
  • understanding how to process your images
  • developing a personal vision

Much of the week will be spent photographing in and around the varied sites around east London. We'll be using our studio to understand studio lighting and backdrops.

There will also be one evening spent shooting in the city working in lower light level conditions. We'll discover the canals and river ways of east London, we'll examine portraiture through a pop-up studio in Brick Lane and we'll have guest lecturers to instruct you on specific skills such as Photoshop and learning how to edit and sequence your work.

There will also be short lectures on both past and contemporary photographers.

We will investigate the three main genres covered in photography:

  • portraiture
  • still life
  • landscape

You'll be encouraged to explore and expand these genres with the images that you produce. You'll be able to print your work and you'll have a set of exhibition/portfolio prints to take home.

Course structure

Specialist skills will be taught through talks, demonstrations and workshops, while practice will be developed through assignments and discussion. The approach to learning is creative and experimental, with individual and personal attention to each student. You'll be encouraged to share your ideas and progress with the group and the tutors.

At the end of the week there will be a review and discussion of the work produced and a mini exhibition in the Alcove Gallery.
