Course description
This four-session course will give you a taste of working with leather, providing a practical guide with emphasis on hands-on application.
Course aims and benefits:
This course will introduce you to the basic skills used in leatherwork. Students with little or no experience of leatherwork will be taught basic skills by making two small items in leather. The projects will cover skills such as cutting and stitching leather.
The course is designed to equip you with the basic skills necessary for you to continue developing the craft of leatherwork. It will be a hands-on approach with advice and guidance throughout, and we'll be using a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will be guided through the techniques used so that you can make simple items, such as a small leather pouch that you will be able to take away.
You will learn:
- about different types of leathers and their uses
- about the basic hand tools used in leatherwork and what jobs they are used for
- to hand stitch and machine sew leather
- to personalise or pattern leather by stamping
- simple techniques used in leatherwork
- to mould leather
- to colour leather

Suitability - Who should attend?
The course is suited to those with little or no experience and for those with an interest in working with leather. This is a practical course so requires a degree of manual dexterity.
