Course description

Wax Carving - Designing Jewellery from Soft Material:

The course will show different techniques, using various waxes - a soft material which can be used at home and does not necessarily require special facilities or workshops for creation. You will develop an understanding of three-dimensional vision, skills in soft and hard wax carving and how to transform the wax to metal, ready to wear.

This course aims to give you the techniques to design your own jewellery and fulfil your jewellery designs. Starting with the first steps – using a block of wax and carving to a high standard. You will learn the whole process of designing jewellery, covering all the details you need in order to build your confidence to start making jewellery directly after the end of the course.

During the course, you will be introduced to:

Working with a variety of waxes – specifically the main different kinds of wax; hard wax (3 types), soft wax, sheets, wires, etc.
Understanding how to design from 2D to 3D. We will learn how to draw from three projections in order to understand a three-dimensional vision. In addition, you will learn freestyle work.
Carving in different techniques, for example; removal and adding from the material, engraving, etc. In addition, you will get the ability to realise your work to higher standards.
Understanding the process of wax casting includes introduced to casting places in London.
Using wax carving tools. We will focus on using a number of basic tools and instruction on how to make these tools by yourself.

During each session, we will learn a new technique, using a different type of wax. The session will start with instruction including examples and inspirations. The remaining time will be allocated to practice, in order to support your skills and improve technique.

The course will introduce you to the next steps upon completion of the course – you will learn where to go and how to go about having your pieces cast in metal from your wax carvings.
