Course description

What will I learn?

Are you thinking of applying for a degree in humanities or social science but don’t have the right qualifications you need for university? Don’t worry – this Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences is the ideal way to develop the foundational skills and relevant grades you’ll need. You’ll cover a wide range of topics and units on this year-long course, focusing on three core subject areas: English, History and Sociology. You could be looking at Renaissance History one day and then be learning how to appreciate a novel the next. As you explore poverty in contemporary Britain and race in society, you might also be studying the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Industrial Revolution. You’ll also get the chance to focus on both poetry and plays, and how to write creative fiction. As you balance a number of simultaneous assignments and deadlines, you’ll be developing the important skills and abilities that are valued by university admissions tutors and potential employers. This includes being able to write academic essays, complete reliable research, and critically analyse documents, all of which you’ll learn on this Access Diploma as you prepare for university.

Suitability - Who should attend?

What do I need to know?

To enrol on this Access to Higher Education Diploma, you’ll need to have GCSEs in both English and Mathematics at grade C or above. If you don’t currently have a GCSE in Maths at grade C or above, but have a Functional Skills Level 2 or grade D qualification, you can enrol on a GCSE class to run alongside this Access Diploma. You’ll need to check if other GCSEs, such as science, are required for the degree you’re interested in. If you’d like to start preparing now for the course, and for subsequent university applications, there are a few things you can do to put yourself in the best possible position. It’s helpful to get as much relevant experience as you can, which could include volunteering with support or youth work, in museums or libraries, with mentoring schemes, or writing for any number of publications – whether it’s poems, short stories, reviews or factual pieces. This will support the requirements needed for a strong university application and help to ensure you make the most of this course.
