Chartered Tax Adviser Qualification Exam Training from Tolley – Distance learning, online & classroom training

The Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) examination consists of three types of traditional written papers as well as online Computer Based Examinations (CBEs). To become a member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (ClOT), candidates must sit and pass four written papers, three CBEs and have three years of practical experience.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The CTA Qualification is suitable for individuals from all tax disciplines who wish to be recognised as competent and qualified to advise on tax matters.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Candidates who are successful in the four written papers and three Computer Based Examinations will be eligible for membership of the CIOT and able to use the title Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) subject to the experience requirements.

Training Course Content

Tolley offer face-to-face classroom, online and distance learning courses for all of the CTA written papers.

The Advanced Technical Papers

Candidates can choose from:

  • Taxation of Individuals
  • Taxation of Owner-Managed Businesses
  • Human Capital Taxes
  • Inheritance Tax, Trusts and Estates
  • Taxation of Major Corporates
  • Domestic Indirect TaxationCross-Border Indirect Taxation

The two Advanced Technical papers have a number of compulsory traditional long questions.

The Awareness Paper

Candidates answer short form questions from three modules out of the five available modules below:

  • Taxation of Individuals
  • Taxation of Unincorporated Businesses
  • Inheritance Tax, Trusts and Estates
  • Corporation Tax
  • VAT including Stamp Taxes

The three modules are partly dictated by your choice of Advanced Technical papers as you cannot select the same area of taxation for both papers.

The Application and Interaction Paper

This is a case study paper where candidates answer one case study from a choice of six below:

  • Taxation of Individuals
  • Inheritance Tax, Trusts and Estates
  • Taxation of Owner-Managed Businesses
  • Human Capital Taxes
  • Taxation of Larger Companies and Groups
  • VAT and other Indirect Taxes

Candidates are expected to choose the one most closely relating to the Advanced Technical papers chosen.

Each written paper is 3 hours and 15 minutes in length (including 15 minutes of reading time)The pass mark for each written tax paper is 50%. The results for the written papers are released in July for the May examinations and January for the November examinations.

The Computer-Based Examinations (CBEs)

Tolley also offers face-to-face classroom, online and distance learning courses for all of the CTA CBEs.

Candidates must also sit and pass, or be exempt from, the CBEs.  There are three CBEs; one for Law, one for Accounting and one for Ethics, 

These are one-hour online examinations of multiple choice and multiple response questions, which candidates can sit at any time during the year.

The pass mark for the CBEs is 60% (30 correct answers out of 50 questions). Candidates receive the results on the day the Computer Based Examination is attempted.
