Course description

Perineal Hernia

Using a blend of lectures and cadaver-based practical sessions, this one-day course is aimed at vets working in practice who wish to perfect their technique for perineal hernia repair in the dog. Morning lectures will cover diagnosis of perineal hernia and its surgical management, with a focus on the use of an internal obturator muscle transposition technique. This technique will be performed on cadavers in the afternoon wetlab session.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This workshop is suitable for vets in first opinion practice or those studying for an RCVS CertAVP in small animal surgery.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop an advanced understanding of the aetiology of perineal hernia in the dog, the different clinical presentations for this disorder and a logical approach to diagnostics and stabilisation.
  • Revise and advance knowledge of perineal anatomy, with a view to developing an empowered approach to problem-solving during surgery while minimising the risk of complications.
  • Demonstrate the practical skills required for perineal herniorrhaphy using an internal obturator muscle flap technique during the cadaver wetlab sessions.
