This apprenticeship is designed for those that have completed their [Intermediate Apprenticeship in Plumbing] and will be dealing with plumbing systems, components and their installation. Plumbers must be familiar with everything from domestic boilers to advanced plumbing systems, the minimum duration of this apprenticeship is 27 months.
The following twelve core units are compulsory – covering the areas essential for success in this work: Mandatory units : Tightness test, purge, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm 1¼ diameter in small natural gas installations; Understand how to organise resources within BSE; Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques; Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques; Understanding and carry out electrical work on domestic plumbing and heating systems and components; Install, commission and de-commission gas pipework up to 35mm 1¼ diameter in domestic and small commercial premises; Specific core installation and maintenance; Understand core gas safety principles for natural gas within domestic building services engineering; Maintain gas water heating and wet central heating appliances; Install domestic gas water heaters and wet central heating appliances; Understand and apply domestic sanitation system installation, commissioning, service and maintenance techniques On site assessment unit; Install, commission, service and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems.
Completion of this qualification combination will provide evidence of competence to Gas Safe Register in the following competence categories: CCN1, CoNGLP 1PD, CPA1, MET1, CENWAT. The results of successful completion of the qualification will be downloaded to Gas Safe Register by City and Guilds.
Suitability - Who should attend?
Applicants will be assessed and interviewed on completion of Intermediate Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating where they will need to demonstrate that they will cover the range required by the relevant NVQ at work. Apprentices will also require GCSE English language and maths at grade A*-C/4-9, as well as GCSE ICT at grade D/3 or Level 1 Functional Skills.
