A modern career in graphic design is guaranteed to provide exciting challenges. Technology, of course, is transforming these opportunities but creativity remains at the heart of it all. On this course, you will explore traditional and digital design in our studios, equipped with the latest Adobe software. You will produce a sophisticated portfolio of work to prepare for higher education or launching a career in graphic design.
Working on our state-of-the-art computers, you will study the following units in your first year: Introduction to visual language in art and design; Introduction to research skills in art and design; Introduction to critical and contextual awareness in art and design; Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in art and design; An integrated approach to 2D problem solving in art and design; An integrated approach to 3D problem solving in art and design; An integrated approach to time-based problem solving in art and design; Developing an art and design project and Opportunities for progression in art and design.
In the second year, you will study: Characteristics and contexts in art and design; Preparation for progression in art and design; Engaging with an audience in art and design and Project proposal and realisation in art and design. You will study towards the Level 3 Diploma (90 credits) in your first year, and progress on to the Extended Diploma (180 credits) in your second year. Alongside your course you will study English and maths and take part in GAP work placements to develop your skills and confidence.
Successful students can progress into work across a wide range of career areas, including graphic design, advertising and animation. Further study options include the Foundation degree in Graphic Design – either here at West Herts College or at university. Over 80% of our students progress to university to study a BA/BSc (Hons) degree.
Suitability - Who should attend?
You should have 4 GCSEs (A*-C/9-4) including English or successful completion of Level 2 Diploma, and a portfolio of work. You will also be invited to a Course Introduction Meeting.
