Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy - Advanced:

In the UK there are 4,800 beauty salons and 36,000 hairdressing salons – 5,800 of which offer beauty therapy treatments (particularly those in hotels and leisure centres). There has been significant growth in the number of independent nail salons, spa facilities and beauty therapy salons offering an extended range of services.

This 12 month apprenticeship is designed for those who want to advance their role to a Beauty, Massage or Spa Therapist.

Depending on the pathway followed and level achieved, learners completing an apprenticeship will undertake roles such as: senior Beauty therapist, Spa Therapist, Electrolysist, Masseur/ Masseuse (Advanced Level), Holistic Therapist.

To complete this qualification, a minimum of 54 credits must be achieved. Some of the units are mandatory and some are optional and chosen with the agreement of the employer and assessor. The assessor will go through these units with the apprentice and employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so the qualification may be achieved successfully. The assessor will visit the workplace to assess apprentices and ensure they meet the minimum national standards.

Units include:


  • Provide body electrical treatments
  • Provide facial electrical treatments
  • Provide body massage treatments
  • Provide electrical epilation treatments
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities


  • Hot stones massage

You will also complete:

  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Maths functional skills level 2
  • English functional skills level 2
  • Employment rights and responsibilities

Suitability - Who should attend?

Candidates should be 16 years or older, working at least 30 hours per week in a salon. Because the industry has high client expectations and relies on repeat business, importance is given to: Appropriate personal presentation including clothing, hair and personal hygiene, practical, organisational and social skills, attention to detail and cleanliness, an amicable nature and good communication skills for dealing face to face with clients or speaking on the telephone, a high degree of dexterity and coordination, willingness to work flexible hours/days as agreed in the employment contract. Potential apprentices with a predisposition to certain skin conditions or allergies, such as occupational dermatitis, eczema or asthma, need to understand that some of the chemicals, liquids and aerosols may have a significant effect on their health condition. Colour blindness would restrict opportunities in artificial colouring products and services, since makeup application and nail services require the ability to recognise tones, shades and changes in a range of colours.
