Course description

Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy - Intermediate:

In the UK there are 4,800 beauty salons and 36,000 hairdressing salons – 5,800 of which offer beauty therapy treatments (particularly those in hotels and leisure centres). There has been significant growth in the number of independent nail salons, spa facilities and beauty therapy salons offering an extended range of services.

This 12 month apprenticeship is designed for those who want to work in a beauty therapy role and can lead to an Advanced Level Apprenticeship.

Depending on the pathway followed and level achieved, learners completing an apprenticeship will undertake roles such as: junior beauty therapist, manicurist or skin care and makeup consultant (Intermediate Level), beauty therapist, electrolysist or masseur/ masseuse.

You must achieve a minimum of 54 credits to achieve this qualification. Some of these units are mandatory and some you may choose with the agreement of your employer and assessor. Your assessor will go through these units with you and your employer in more detail and discuss how the credits work so you may achieve your qualification successfully. Your assessor will visit you in the workplace to assess you to ensure you meet the minimum national standards.

Mandatory units include:

  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Promote additional products and services to customers
  • Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
  • Provide facial skin care treatment
  • Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes
  • Carry out waxing services

  • Provide pedicure services.

Optional units include:

  • English functional skills level 1
  • Employment rights and responsibilities.

Suitability - Who should attend?

For the Intermediate Apprenticeship programme you should be 16 years or older, in a salon for a minimum of 30 hours per week. Please note it is necessary to have a job before applying for the apprenticeship. Job vacancies can be found on the apprenticeship page of our website. Because the industry has high client expectations and relies on repeat business, importance is given to: Appropriate personal presentation including clothing, hair and personal hygiene; Practical, organisational and social skills; Attention to detail and cleanliness; An amicable nature and good communication skills for dealing face to face with clients or speaking on the telephone; Willingness to work flexible hours/days; A high degree of dexterity and coordination. Potential apprentices with a predisposition to skin conditions or allergies, such as occupational dermatitis, eczema or asthma, need to understand that some chemicals, liquids and aerosols used may have a significant effect on their health condition. Colour blindness would restrict opportunities in artificial colouring products and services, since makeup application and nail services require the ability to recognise tones, shades and changes in a range of colours.
