Course description

Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care - Advanced:

This is the sole apprenticeship framework for people employed in delivering adult social care in England. This framework covers the health and social care sectors which include: the National Health Service, private providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

In social care this framework provides a suitable way to meet the development and qualification needs of a variety of roles and job titles, including care workers, community, support and outreach workers, personal assistance, domiciliary care workers, supervisors and senior care workers. This qualification is suitable for existing staff who don’t already have a qualification and wish to progress within their organisation.

To complete this qualification, a minimum of 58 credits must be achieved. Some of the units are mandatory and some are optional and chosen with the agreement of the employer and assessor.

Mandatory units:

  • Promote communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care
  • The role of the health and social-care worker
  • Promote person-centred approaches in health and social care
  • Promote and implement health and safety in health and social care
  • Promote good practice in handling information in health and social care settings.

  • Purpose and principles of independent advocacy
  • Understand mental well-being, mental health promotion and mental health problems
  • Dementia
  • Relationships
  • Personalisation in social care
  • Infection
  • Cleaning, decontamination and waste management
  • Individuals with learning disabilities
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Autism
  • Impact of brain injuries
  • Awareness of sensory loss
  • Advocacy support
  • Substance misuse
  • Administering medicine
  • Dementia
  • Provide support to manage pain and discomfort, to continue recommended therapy, to maintain and develop skills
  • Pressure area care
  • Raising awareness of health issues
  • Community partnerships and support groups
  • Support individuals in their day to day life and work in partnership with their family
  • Obtain venous blood samples
  • Support and work with families
  • Individuals with learning disabilities
  • Individuals with disabilities
  • Assistive technology
  • Sensory loss.

You will also complete courses in:

  • Level 3Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care
  • Personal learning and thinking skills
  • Maths functional skills level 2
  • English functional skills level 2
  • Employment rights and responsibilities

Suitability - Who should attend?

For the Advanced Apprenticeship programme, candidates must have been an EU Resident for three years or more. Qualifications such as English and maths are desirable and candidates should be educated to Level 2. Apprentices need to be working over 30 hours per week in the health and care environment.
