Course description
Develop your practical skills in horse riding or stud work, and explore equine theory, with our hands-on Level 2 Certificate in Equine Care at Writtle College.
This Level 2 course is ideal if you’re looking to work with horses and want to learn more about their care, handling and management.
As a student at Writtle College you’ll be based in our Equine Training and Development Centre. Part of our rural 150-hectare campus, it’s home to around 70 horses, a stable yard, and a range of equine facilities.
You’ll also gain valuable experience with a 150-hour work placement in the equine industry. We’ll help you find a suitable placement and monitor your progress while you’re there.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Main
- 4 GCSEs at Grade 9-3 or A*-D
- Minimum of Grade 3 or D in English and Maths
- Satisfactory references from most recent school, college or employer
- A riding ability that is close toBritish Horse Society (BHS) Stage 2 Ridestandard and some experience of working with horses. (We do not expect you to have passed any BHS exams before studying with us; this is just a guide to the riding level required for entry.)
Other equine qualifications will be considered, such as Pony club qualifications C+ and above or British Horse Society Stage 1 qualification.
Due to the nature and welfare of the horses at Writtle College, we operate a personal weight restriction of no more than 13 stone; non-riding options are available.

Course delivery details
This course covers a range of activities including grooming, trimming and plaiting, horse tack and clothing, feeding and watering horses, introduction to lunging, horse handling, riding, and work-related experience. Activities are subject to change and availability.
You’ll also develop your English and Maths skills throughout the course.
Assessment
We’ll assess your progress in a number of ways including practical assessments, worksheets, projects, written assignments, presentations and exams.
As a guide, you should plan to undertake an additional four hours of study per week outside of college to complete your work.
