Though gaining SAP certification doesn't necessarily require you to take a course (you can also decide to sit the relevant exam directly), most people will probably want or need to study before feeling that they are really ready. The official way to do so is by taking a SAP course (i.e. a course developed and delivered directly by SAP), since these are the only "official" courses that are developed specifically in order to train people for the certifications. Though you may find other providers offering SAP training, any course that is not delivered directly by SAP will be, by definition, non-official. As a result, there is no real way of determining the quality of the training that will you will receive from external providers.

Course length (as well as dates & locations) will vary depending on whether you are after associate or professional certification, as well as your role. SAP also offers a range of online resources that you can find in their Training and Certification shop.

More recently, they also launched openSAP, which is their version of a MOOC. It is free of charge (except for optional system access) and delivered entirely online in an interactive format, giving participants the opportunity to connect with SAP experts and fellow professionals. These courses generally require a time commitment of 4-5 hours per week.
