UKATA – Mission and Vision
The UKATA controls training on asbestos industry in all regions of UK, from Wales to the North East. Approximately 4,000 people die from asbestos-related illness each year in UK and most of them are trade persons, joiners, technicians and plumbers. The UKATA mission is to decrease these numbers by requiring those who work near asbestos to have an awareness of the dangers they are facing and those who work with it to have proper training about the work that they are undertaking. The ultimate vision of this organisation is to constantly maintain and upgrade the standard of courses to create a scenario in which casualties are eradicated altogether.
Approved Asbestos courses
UKATA accepts applications from training providers offering three types of training:
- Licensed Asbestos Training
- Non Licensed Asbestos Training
- Asbestos Awareness Training
UKATA approved courses from different training providers thus focus primarily on asbestos awareness and handling asbestos safely. The courses teach delegates about the nature and properties of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs), types and likely occurrences of asbestos and their harmful effects on health. Candidates will be equipped with information on suspicious materials, appropriate workplace precautions, risk assessment processes and undertaking tasks in a secure way to avoid posing risks to themselves or others.
Professionals working near or with asbestos are also required to learn about general health and safety legislation, as well as the specific rules relating to asbestos. Such issues are thus covered in all UKATA approved courses, as well as the importance of following certain guidelines when exposed to asbestos unintentionally and the appropriate measures to be taken in case of emergency.
Asbestos courses are available at different training institutes across the UK as well as online. The course fees are generally kept are minimal to encourage workers and professionals to enrol, although they also have a legal obligation to do so.
UKATA has been responsible for managing the list of providers offering training for licensed asbestos work since 2008, taking on responsibility from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
