Advance your career and gain professional recognition with the Certificate in Company Direction. As a long-established professional awarding body, the IoD in the UK is the only Institute in the world to offer qualifications for directors under Royal Charter.
Whether you’re newly appointed, aspire to a seat on the board, or want to improve performance with fresh insight, the Certificate in Company Direction is designed to equip you with the core knowledge and awareness that is necessary to function effectively as a director:
- An in-depth view of the role, responsibilities and legal duties of a director
- An understanding of the characteristics of an effective board
- Sound knowledge of financial terms and concepts
- The issues and processes associated with formulating strategic and business plans and achieving strategic leadership.
This is covered in four face-to-face modules each supported by the the IoD Learning Zone e-learning site. The four modules are available across the UK, in London, the Midlands and Edinburgh. Completion of these courses leads to the Certificate examination.
The IoD also offers a 5-day fast-track version of the Certificate in Company Direction for those who wish to gain the qualification in an intensive format.

Training Course Content
1. Role of the Director and the Board - 2-day course
Delivering an essential understanding of the board’s role in corporate governance and risk management, this introduction to the duties and legal responsibilities of a director will enable you to tackle the challenges of the boardroom with fresh confidence and progress your career to the next level.
2. Finance for Non-Finance Directors - 3-day course
This course is designed specificallyfor non-finance directors andsenior managers. It will demystify the world of finance, allowing you tomonitor the financial health of yourbusiness, evaluate business planswith confidence and contribute moreeffectively to boardroom discussion.
3. Leadership for Directors* - 2-day course
This course introduces a more personalised approach to leadership and delegates will be encouraged to understand and develop their own self-awareness and emotional intelligence. During the course you will assess different leadership and decision-making techniques, determine how to build and sustain high-performing teams, and evaluate how these can be applied to your own organisation to contribute to its increased success.
4.Strategy for Directors- 3-day course
This course will help you to explore the relationship between strategy, governance and risk and learn how to use tools and frameworks that support strategic thinking and decision-making. It provides the practical insights into how to deliver your current business objectives while future-proofing your organisation.
