Course description

Hairdressing - Level 3:

This course gives you the knowledge and skills to work with a large variety of hair types and develops your awareness of the industry. It is ideal if you have some experience of hairdressing already and want to progress further with your hairdressing and barbering talents and get the techniques to work as a stylist. We have plenty of professional suppliers coming to college to deliver bespoke training on latest products and equipment. This is boosted by employers and salon owners giving demonstrations and talks on making it in the sector. As well as work experience in our salon there can also be opportunities for experience in professional salons - previous students have even seen this lead to part-time work.

As well as internal competitions, there are also a number of local and national competitions that you'll get involved with. In the prestigious WorldSkills competitions we've put through plenty of our students and this is a great way to learn from your peers and to be exposed to new experiences. As a Level 3 student, you'll be mentoring and supervising Level 1 and Level 2 students so you'll have real experience of operating in a supervisory role. As well as daytime lessons you'll need to come into College one evening a week or on a Saturday. You must be working or volunteering in a salon environment for a minimum of two days a week already. Optional units include subjects like developing and maintaining effectiveness at work. Additional units include:

  • Advising and consulting with clients
  • Cutting men's and women's hair using different techniques
  • Hair styling and finishing, including for combined hair types
  • Setting and dressing hair
  • Changing hair colour
  • Health and safety.

Continuous assessment by observation on paying clients, formal and informal online tests, written assignments and tests as well as building up a portfolio of your work. On completion of this course students could progress into work at a salon in a supervisory capacity or onto a university-level course to improve your skills.
