Course description
This online course describes the capabilities, components and operation of the next generation fixed line access networks that will meet the demand for very high capacity broadband connections to online services in the coming years.
This course is designed for technicians and engineers involved in the design, commissioning and maintenance of copper and optical fibre based access networks.
The course begins by describing the basic infrastructure and capabilities of existing copper and fibre based access networks. Then the use of dynamic spectrum management to enhance the performance of VDSL broadband connections is described. Next, the principles of operation, capabilities and applications of G.fast broadband connections over copper wires are described. Then the capabilities and operation of the various generation of passive optical networks are described including XG-PON and TWDM PON.
This online course consists of four modules each covering a particular topic. Assessment sessions at the end of each module tests understanding and provide feedback to aid understanding. The results of these assessments are summarised in the course completion certificate.

Suitability - Who should attend?
An appreciation of the basic principles of transmitting signals over copper wires and optical fibre. It is recommended that the PTT course "Transmission fundamentals" is studied before attempting this course.
