Course description

Introduction to Illustration - Next Steps: The course is a follow on from Introduction to Illustration and aims to encourage you to explore more ways of communicating visually. The course will use a combination of drawing, watercolour and computer skills to create images that are ready for publishing. You will also be given the opportunity to experiment with mark-making, print and collage to help find a creative style which works for you.

Together the group will learn more about the world of contemporary illustration and discover the creative process behind projects such as picture book, graphic novels or editorial illustration.
The course will be a project based course designed to further develop the student�s illustrator skills. We will look at drawing and painting skills as well as computer generated techniques. The course will cover the following -

1. Planning and researching illustration projects. How to develop an initial idea into a finished illustration.
2. Pen and ink drawing techniques. Using ink mark-making and ink wash to capture light and shadow.
3. Watercolour techniques with the emphasis on hand colouring pen and ink illustrations.
4. Experiment with textures and pattern using printmaking and collage.
5. The computer skills will examine mainly Adobe Photoshop with some Illustrator. These are very large programs so we will concentrate primarily on skills specific to illustration techniques.
6. Colouring illustrations in Photoshop.
7. Creating digital images that are ready for web and print.
8. Students will be given a choice of project suggestions to choose from. There will also be room for students who wish to work on appropriate personal projects

Through a series of practical demonstrations and hands-on exercises you will develop you drawing, painting and digital skills. Together we will look at the work of illustrators, both contemporary and historical and take inspiration from group discussions. Students are encouraged to participate in the exchanging of ideas and experie

Suitability - Who should attend?

The course will benefit students some previous experience who wish to practise and develop their skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Please be aware that this course is a follow on from C00322 Introduction to Illustration. You must have completed the Intro to Illustration course to ensure you have learnt the skills needed for this Next Steps course, otherwise you will not be at the right level and will not get the most out of the course. This aims to encourage you to explore more ways of communicating visually. The course will use a combination of drawing, watercolour and computer skills to create images that are ready for publishing. You will also be given the opportunity to experiment with mark-making, print and collage to help find a creative style which works for you.
