Course description

Edexcel Level 3 Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) 180 Credit Extended Diploma:

This two-year full-time course provides an introduction to the sector for learners looking to build a career in sport, within one of its occupational areas. These areas include careers in exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership, sports development, and the outdoors. This programme is equivalent to three A Levels. Some of the units you will study include: the principles of anatomy and physiology in sport, the physiology of fitness, assessing risk in sport, fitness training and programming, sports coaching, sports development, fitness testing for sport and exercise, and practical team sports. You will also have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications such as Community Sports Leaders Award, Coaching Awards (FA Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching) and Functional Skills in Communications and ICT. There are many opportunities for you to assist in coaching sport in primary schools, help officiate at championships and work at other sports events in the area. The course also gives learners the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.

Assessment will take various forms including practical assessment, written coursework and presentations. Various activities and events are organised by the Students’ Union. Within the sports department we organise outdoor adventure activity days, residential trips (with subsidised activities), and college sports teams compete in the Association of Colleges Sport Leagues. You will also have the chance to lead activities in local primary schools and overseas in Goa with disadvantaged children. Over half of our students progress to university to study degrees or Higher National Diplomas in a variety of areas such as Sports Therapy, Physical Education, Sports Management, Exercise Science or Sports Coaching. Others move into employment in the sport and active leisure sector, working for private coaching companies in schools, leisure centres and community hubs.
