Course description
Certificate in Corporate Governance
This broad, introductory course covers the principles of good governance across many different sectors. You will develop a strong core knowledge of corporate governance frameworks and codes, and be better placed to navigate governance structures, help mitigate potential issues, and support your organisation. Students who successfully complete the Level 4 Certificate in Corporate Governance qualification are eligible to become Affiliated members and continue to benefit from the knowledge and support of our governance and compliance community.
The Chartered Governance Institute UK & Ireland recommends approximately 200 hours study time for the course across 10 months.
The new course schedule will deliver up to 12 live webinars with one of our experienced tutors using the Zoom platform.
The course assessment has moved away from a 100% exam to a more interactive model:
- 20% Course participation (includes webinars, forum discussions, formative quizzes, and wellbeing workshops)
- 40% written report (3000-3500 words)
- 40% multiple-choice exam (1 hour exam)
As a student you will have access to a community of practice with like-minded professionals and resources on our new learning management system (LMS).
An induction session will help you to navigate the LMS and the CGI websites, including MyCG.

Suitability - Who should attend?
This programme is open entry, with no prior qualifications required, and suitable if you are living or working in the UK or internationally.
This is suitable if you work in the private or other sectors in governance support roles and have received no formal or structured training. It is suitable if you want to refresh your knowledge of corporate governance codes and practices. It is also appropriate if you are an international student looking to improve your knowledge and understanding of good governance practices.
Particular job roles may include:

Outcome / Qualification etc.
Candidates who are successful in the examination will be awarded the Certificate in Corporate Governance.

This qualification will help you better understand:
- The role of the board and company secretary
- How to support and engage with the board on legal, financial and regulatory issues
- Frameworks and principles of governance and how to apply the relevant codes
- Knowledge on key players in governance and decision making complexities
- The best ways to manage risk
There are four modules covering the following topic areas:
- General principles of corporate governance
- The board, shareholders and corporate reporting
- Board procedure and governance administration
- Risk governance
