Time to Train: New right that will benefit individuals and businesses alike in the UK

Time to Train is the governments initiative to empower employees to request the 'time to train' to increase the skills of the UK's workforce.

The right to request time to train was included in the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act, which received Royal Assent in November 2009. Investment in skills is key to ensuring that the UK develops a stronger economy and at the same time encourages individuals to make the most of their abilities. Employees, employers and the economy will all benefit from the new right to request time off work for training.

Learning at work will be transformed as employees feel empowered and motivated to improve their skills and develop themselves through this legal right. Knowing that they have the right to ask will encourage millions of employees, putting pressure on employers who don't train to think again and helping all employees get a fair chance to improve their skills. Employers can, of course, say no but will need to show good reason.

In response to this law, which effectively took place from 6th April, 2010 for organisations with more than 250 employees, and aims to be extended in 2011 for all other businesses, Findcourses.co.uk brings to our users the detailed information and advice from BusinessLink.gov.uk.

News: Training requests will not be extended to all employees on the 6th April, 2011, as previously stated.

Time to Train - latest information Please read our blog post with up-to-date information on the Governments delaying of the extension of the right to make a request in relation to study or training here.

At Findcourses.co.uk we welcome this new law, and hope this new right will open up many more opportunities for employees to access vital leadership and management training, and as a result improve business efficiency across the UK.

Under the 'time to train' right, employees will be able to request:

  • training leading to a qualification
  • training to help you develop skills relevant to your job, workplace or business
  • courses such as English for Speakers of Other Languages

It is our aim to help employees find the right training and courses, and at the same time for organisations to be able to easily manage their employees training, thus we have developed a number of pages to provide more information on this. Using the official guidance information published by governing bodies, BusinessLink and DirectGov, we will provide all you need to know as an employee and an employer.
