Course description

Mobile Communications

This online course introduces the learner to basic concepts such as signals, systems and noise, as well as the various modulation schemes used in modern mobile networks are covered. Learners will gain an understanding about the wireless propagation environment, modulation, coding and multiple access techniques.

The course focuses on the detailed implementation of two key mobile systems, GSM and UMTS, from the viewpoints of system architecture, the physical layer and system implementation. The Long-Term Evolution (LTE) system is also covered giving learners insight into the ways in which LTE represents an improvement over previous generations.

Suitability - Who should attend?

This course is aimed at graduates through to experienced employees working in the telecommunications industry either as engineers, marketing professionals or managers, who are looking to upskill in areas of current and future mobile communications technologies and standards.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

By the end of this course learners will be able to:

  • Know and understand the engineering principles of wireless transmission, cellular systems and the different cellular/mobile systems
  • Understand the effects of multi-path propagation and fading in various cellular environments
  • Analyse and calculate the path loss in a radio channel
  • Develop thorough knowledge of system architecture, signal formats, channel structure and services for GSM, UMTS and 4G/LTE systems
  • Understand different modulation and coding schemes used in cellular/mobile systems and justify the choice of particular schemes for the given applications
  • Understand the standardisation process of wireless systems and the different cellular generations and be familiar with issues associated with the development of technologies and standards
  • Compare the different cellular generations and standards in terms of capabilities, technologies (core and wireless access/physical layer), services, costs, complexity and history.
  • Make a learned guess of what is `next step’ in cellular systems development on the basis of thorough understanding of existing systems and of systems under development.
