Insurance is quite a flexible industry in terms of qualifications, largely because there are not that many Insurance-specific degree programmes that really prepare you for such a career. As a result, it is quite common for Insurance companies to have specific graduate and/or internal training programmes in place in order to support individuals who are starting out in the sector.
In most cases, what they are looking for in a candidate is thus someone who has great general business skills. This includes things like communication and client relationship skills, negotiation skills, problem-solving and lateral thinking. Naturally, they also expect you to have an interest in the insurance industry and a general knowledge of how it works, but in many cases these general skills will be enough to make you an attractive candidate. The firm will then help you work towards more specific qualifications relevant to your role.
But since it does tend to be a competitive industry, you can also decide to get a head start completing an Introduction to Insurance course. These are delivered by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) - the leading professional body for financial services - as well as a number of accredited providers. If you want to be even more ambitious, you can also enrol in a CII Award programme, which will give you an even broader foundation of knowledge and skills.
