Course description

Study Further Mathematics because it is extremely interesting, very challenging and incredibly satisfying when you apply various techniques to a complex problem and end up with the correct answer! If you do this course you will have to study GCE Mathematics A level concurrently, or have completed GCE A Level Mathematics in the past and have at least a Grade B. If you are considering studying Mathematics, Physics or Engineering at university, Further Mathematics introduces some of the more advanced mathematical concepts you will need. It is extremely useful, in some cases essential, if you want to do a Mathematics or Engineering degree, particularly at one of the more prestigious universities. It is also very useful for Physics courses, or any other course that involves mathematical or statistical analysis.

You will develop your understanding of Mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment; develop an understanding of coherence and progression and of how different areas can be connected. You will extend your range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problems.

You will also improve the wider skills vital for success in further studies or employment, including self-confidence, speaking in front of others, collaboration with others, taking responsibility and managing your time.

Those students wanting to study a wider range of mathematical topics at A Level and those looking to study any Mathematics or Science related course at one of the more competitive universities.

Excellent teaching and very high pass rates.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

This course is especially valuable for those thinking of studying subjects like Mathematics, Engineering or Physics at University. Furthermore it is expected that students who are applying for these degree courses at the most prestigious universities have studied some Further Mathematics.

Training Course Content

We follow the AQA specification.

In addition to the content studied at A-level Mathematics, you will also have to study

  • Further Pure Mathematics

and two of the following options:

  • Mechanics [additional material from Mechanics to be studied at A Level Maths]
  • Discrete Maths
  • Statistics [additional material from Statistics to be studied at A Level Maths]

In Further Pure Mathematics you will develop your abilities in algebra, geometry, trigonometry as well as learning about new techniques and concepts. You will learn about new topics such as Complex Numbers and Hyperbolic Functions and develop more techniques in topics like integration so that you can solve harder problems.

The Mechanics topic is a very mathematical approach to solving Physics problems. This part of Mechanics will build on the Mechanics unit in A Level Mathematics. Discrete Mathematics uses networks and algorithms to solve practical problems, also starts the journey to abstract algebra. Statistics will build on the Statistics unit topic studied in A Level Mathematics.

Course delivery details

Explanations of new concepts, solving related mathematical problems individually and in groups.
There will be a range of regular assignments, online assessments via our virtual learning environment (ALO) and regular personal feedback on your progression. Homework: Regular problem solving to support topics currently being taught in class.
Tasks will be differentiated and will need usually between 2 and 3 hours work per week.

Expenses
