Course description

Learn how to care for people of different ages in a variety of settings on the Certificate in Health and Social Care. It's a practical work-related course which introduces you to the principles of care and includes supervised work placements.

You will learn about various care settings and also have a chance to apply your learning with work experience.

You get qualified in personal social and development skills and sensory skills for care workers. You will also gain a functional skills qualification.

Suitability - Who should attend?

To enter this course, you will be required to have four GCSEs at minimum grade 3, including English Language at grade 4 and science at grade 3. 

Training Course Content

You study units which reflect the varied nature of health and social care. They include:

  • communication and individual rights
  • meeting individual needs
  • cultural diversity
  • human lifespan development
  • creative and therapeutic activities
  • the impact of diet on health

Key topics covered include: communication skills, personal development, an introduction to equality and inclusion, providing activities for people of all abilities and backgrounds, and safeguarding, including recognising signs of abuse and learning how to empower people to protect themselves from abuse.

After completing this course, you could progress to the Health and Social Care Level 3 BTEC Subsidiary/ Extended Diploma.

Course delivery details

You will learn through classroom-based lessons and activities, plus supervised work placements. You will gain the range of knowledge and skills that you need to be successful in a career in the care sector, as well as vital work experience.

Learners will be expected to have GCSE grade 4 in English. In addition, you will have the opportunity to improve your maths skills.

Assessment is through assignment work which is assessed internally and moderated externally.
