Course description

You will study a variety of sociological theories, studies and concepts, and learn how to evaluate these in a critical manner. The focus will tend to be on British society but comparisons will be made with other countries.

Sociology could lead to a variety of jobs or university courses and is a good general qualification which is very well regarded by universities and employers.

This course can be studied as part of the business, communications or social sciences A Level pathway at Reading College.

Suitability - Who should attend?

5 GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths.

Training Course Content

You will learn how to analyse the society in which we live. You will examine sociological theories, studies and concepts and learn how to evaluate them.

Your study will include the following units:

  • Unit 1: families and households
  • Unit 2: education and sociological methods
  • Unit 3: beliefs in society
  • Unit 4: crime and deviance linked to theory and methods

Course delivery details

Your study will involve a combination of practical exercises and theory. You will have your own specialist personal tutor who you will meet individually or as part of a group tutorial. They will help you set, review and achieve your targets.

There is an extensive programme of support to help you make higher education decisions and move on to university. The vast majority of A-level students progress successfully to higher education.

We have many enrichment opportunities on offer and you will be encouraged to select from a range including volunteering, work experience, sport and performing.

    You will learn in groups and there will be ongoing timed assessments. There is no formal coursework assessment on this course.
