Course description

This short course will introduce you to the concept and principles of Water Safety Plans, provide an understanding of ways to ensure safe water supply from different sources, provide an understanding of the concept of Sanitation Safety Planning, and the steps and procedures required for preventing the exposure of humans to diseases from human waste and disposal of human waste.

What you will learn

The concept of water and sanitation safety plans through the lens of the water system, hazard identification and risk assessment from catchment to 'tap' as a way of lowering the risk hazards reaching the consumer in concentrations or numbers of concern; further provide an understanding of the different points of health and safety exposure along the sanitation service chain, assess risks and consider mitigation measures.

Training Course Content

Core content

  • Ways to ensure safe water supply from different sources,
  • Identify chemicals of concern in drinking water systems, where and how problems could arise,
  • Understand how to put in barriers and management systems to stop the problems before they happen,
  • Understanding of the WHO guidelines and recommendations on sanitation safety,
  • Understand the adverse health impact that can occur from the use of wastewater, excreta and greywater,
  • Evaluate ways of reducing exposure along the chain of handling and disposal and preventing waste and wastewater from contaminating freshwater sources.
