This course will present principles of safely and effectively processing scenes in hazardous environments and where evidence may in itself be hazardous.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Those undertaking or managing investigations either in hazardous or remote environments, or where the source of investigation may itself be hazardous (CBRN, Explosives, Hazmat) or if the investigation is in a hazardous situation such as a war.

What you will learn

On successful completion of the course those attending should be able to:

  • Define the types of hazard that might be presented by a forensic scene or by the weapon used
  • Discriminate between a range of systematic options for managing CBRN and hazardous scenes
  • Evaluate the value of evidence and its admissibility due to possible contamination
  • Prepare a crime scene report for a CBRN scene which objectively critiques the methodologies used and draws justified conclusions appropriate for the evidence
  • Appraise the evidence and procedures specific to the use of a hazardous material and understand the challenges presented.

  • Introduction to hazardous sites, scenes and threats,
  • Recognising hazardous scenes,
  • Evaluating and planning for operating in hazardous and contaminated scenes,
  • Management and mitigations for hazardous and contaminated crime scenes,
  • CBRN contamination and evidence challenges,
  • Illustrative cases of scenes including drugs, poisons, asphyxiants, diseases, radiation and explosives,
  • Investigation report types,
  • Practical exercises in identifying, managing and mitigating hazards at a scene,
  • Containing, handling and transferring potentially contaminated evidence.
