Course description

Managing and Developing Family Businesses

Family businesses come in all shapes and sizes. In the UK alone, they contribute £460 billion to the economy and employ over 12 million people *Institute for Family Business Research Foundation Report. However, running and working in a family business is not without its challenges. This short course explores some of the key issues faced by family businesses. It provides course delegates with the confidence and strategies to ensure they can develop and embed a positive culture, underpinned by effective working practices and remain forward-looking and inventive in their outlook.

Delegates attending this course will explore succession, wealth planning and communication, offering new ways of managing long term challenges. The course will provide opportunities for networking and assimilation of best practice.

Training Course Content

Session 1: Understanding your family: Getting to grips with genograms

In this session we will look at family enterprises through the lens of a family genogram. Whether you are a family member or working with a family, this session will show you how to construct a genogram and use it to help inform decision making. Understanding the nuanced relationships between family members (in family enterprises) is vital to understand the dynamics that exist between groups and individuals.

Session 2: Family enterprise dynamics: Gender, sexuality, outsiders and hierarchy

In this session we will build upon the previous one to explore the roles of gender and sexuality can impact on the family enterprise. Moreover, we will investigate the powerful influence of ‘outsiders’ namely: non-family members, most-trusted advisors and external services.

Session 3: Conflict management in family enterprise: Exploring some tools

This session focuses on understanding conflict within family enterprises. Using the previous two sessions we will explore how having an understanding of the family relationships, within a family enterprise, can help in the resolution of conflict. The session will utilise and explore some tools to help facilitate conversations in the resolution of conflict.

Session 4: Family Wealth: Managing wealth for generations to come

This session will explore how family enterprises manage wealth. It focuses on the management structures within family enterprises and the challenges that are faced by professionals working with and within family firms. This particular session will give the group the opportunity to share best practice given industry, location and generational influences.

Session 5: Communication, play and interaction: overcoming challenges in family groups

This interactive session will demonstrate how play can help to facilitate interaction and communication in groups. It is particular useful for family enterprises, but could also be used with any group that wants to improve communication. This innovative approach to facilitation is currently popular in East Asia, and has some excellent success in family retreats and business groups.
