Course description

Abrasive Wheels Training (In-house)

In the UK, the safe handling and operation of abrasive wheels is paramount for a multitude of industries, from construction to manufacturing. Abrasive wheel training is designed to equip individuals with the vital knowledge and skills to work efficiently and safely with these tools. This training ensures that users understand the risks associated with abrasive wheels, the precautions that need to be taken, and the correct methods of storing, handling, and using such equipment.

With the Health and Safety at Work Act placing a strong emphasis on the duty of care for both employers and employees, obtaining accredited training in this area is not only recommended but often essential for maintaining workplace safety standards.

This course consists of an instructor led training room presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

In-House Training

In-house training is a comprehensive approach where employees are trained on equipment directly within the company premises, ensuring they are familiar with the specific equipment and environment they will be working in. This training typically covers a wide range of topics, including safety procedures, equipment operation, load handling, and maintenance checks. The process usually begins with classroom instruction, where trainees learn about mechanics, safety regulations, and best practices.

Following the theoretical component, trainees move on to hands-on training under the supervision of experienced operators or trainers. During this practical phase, trainees have the opportunity to operate the forklift in a controlled setting, allowing them to apply their knowledge and develop their skills in a real-world context. Assessments are conducted throughout the training to ensure that participants have understood the material and can operate the equipment safely and efficiently.

By conducting training in-house, companies can tailor the program to their specific needs and work environment, promoting a safer and more efficient workplace.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Age

Most trainers won’t train anyone under the age of 17, and most employers won’t employ drivers under 18 due to limitations in place due to the weight of forklifts they are operating.

Medical Fitness

Forklift drivers and operators need to have the appropriate medical fitness level for the work they are expected to undertake.

It is good practice for all operators to be screened for fitness before employment and at regular intervals.

Normal levels of fitness required by forklift operators are:

General – Operators should have full movement of the trunk, neck, limbs and normal agility.

Vision – Operating a lift truck depends on good judgement of space and distance and this required effective use of both eyes. Distance vision should be of the same standard for driving a car on public roads.

Hearing – The ability to hear instructions and warning signals is important, although a risk assessment can be taken to determine if deafness does not constitute a hazard.

An experienced worker who loses a lib can retrain, but a stable disposition is required. An individual who is dependant on alcohol or non-prescribed drugs should not be employed as a lift truck operator.

Driving License

You don’t need to hold a valid UK driving license to operate a forklift truck unless you need to drive the forklift on public roads or highways.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

On completion of this forklift training, drivers are fully certified to operate this category of truck. The qualification is nationally recognised and accepted throughout the industry.

  • Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB)
  • The accrediting Bodies Association for Workplace Transport (ABA)
  • British register of Industrial truck trainers and operators (BRITTOp)
  • Member of British Safety Council
