Vietnamese Beginners

This course aims to help the learner acquire basic Vietnamese and is suitable for those with no prior knowledge of Vietnamese as well as those who may have acquired a few sentences and expressions whilst travelling in Vietnamese or through interaction with Vietnamese speakers. Speaking and listening skills are emphasized and there are practice tests for reading and writing in each lesson. By the end of Vietnamese Beginners, participants will have learned sufficient Vietnamese to be able to greet people, introduce themselves, say where they are from, ask for directions, shop for goods, and order food and drink.

Besides vocabulary and expressions needed to talk about everyday topics, participants will practice the six tones and pronunciation of Vietnamese. The Vietnamese language system will be introduced gradually, along with the various personal pronouns and initial/final particles that are a crucial part of Vietnamese culture. Participants will follow an established model of teaching through spoken and written activities, reviews, tests and games in a friendly and supportive environment. Interactive dialogue simulation, in pairs or groups, allow for an opportunity to practice what has been covered. At the end of the course, participants will be able confidently to initiate conversation in Vietnamese.
