Course description

GCSE English:

This course will provide you with a recognised GCSE qualification in English. There are various opportunities for progression once you have completed this course depending on whether you wish to improve your employability or progress onto other courses. It will provide you with more confidence and skill in reading, writing and presenting your ideas orally.

You will study: How to produce non-fiction texts by writing clearly, effectively and imaginatively e.g. a letter, speech or article. This will provide the basis for the final examination; How to present a variety of topics through Speaking and Listening activities delivered individually and in groups; Reading and responding to texts, focusing on how to write about a text and Creative writing where you will be required to produce your own short story or article. You will also be asked to investigate how we use spoken language in different situations.

To pass this course you will need to: Complete a 2-hour written examination at the end of the course; Produce 4 pieces of assessed written work under Controlled Assessment conditions and Complete three Speaking and Listening activities. GCSE English is an entry requirement to a large range of courses and employment.

Suitability - Who should attend?

All applicants will be offered a place on successful completion of a diagnostic assessment. To take the diagnostic assessment applicants need to be able to communicate competently in speech and writing before starting the course.
