Developing an Evidence Base for Practice
This module develops knowledge, understanding and skills for the promotion of evidence-based practice for practitioners in education, health and social welfare contexts. Students will be introduced to levels and types of evidence, develop skills in framing questions about their practice, searching and reading the literature, and in critical analysis. Principles of assessment practice and psychometric interpretation will be explored. Students will develop skills in evaluating their own practice.

Suitability - Who should attend?
Speech and Language Therapists, teachers and other professionals working with people with speech, language, literacy and communication difficulties.
Outcome / Qualification etc.
By the end of the module students are expected to be able to:
- Construct appropriate questions for developing an evidence-base
- Find and use informational resources, including appropriate literature
- Critique research studies, including various methodologies using both quantitative and qualitative designs
- Use research evidence in their professional decision-making.
Course delivery details
The module content is delivered online and includes guided independent study, using online reading material available from the University Library. Students are supported by University tutors via online discussion boards and email.
Online learning will be supplemented by an optional 1-day study block in Sheffield.
Assessment
A 3,000-word assignment.
